Ships in the nucleus fleet are identified and classified by
standard
Navy letter and numeral groups. As shown in the table here, the
classification group letters are prefixed by the letter T
to indicate a ship attached to the
MSTS fleet. In-service ships
are referred to by the name of the ship followed by a
parenthetical designator consisting of the letter T
followed by the class and number of the ship; for example, USNS
Comet (T-AK 269). Usually in-service ships show names, but no
numbers, on bow and stern.

Most MSTS ships are painted Navy gray; all bear the distinctive stack
marking of black, gray, blue, and yellow bands. Many ships are
also referred to by their original design designations that were
adopted by the Maritime Commission in 1944. The table below
shows the classification of groups by type and length of ship.

1 "E-" prefix indicates an "Emergency" (as opposed to a "Long Range"
type vessel; it is applied exclusively to Liberty Ship designs. EC2-S-C1
is the standard Liberty
The table below shows a further designation by kind of power, number of propellers,
and number of passengers. The type of propulsion might be steam, diesel, gas turbine,
or nuclear power. Thus a T2-SE-A2 is a tanker, 450 feet to 500 feet long on the waterline,
with steam turbogenators furnishing power to the electric propulsion motors that drive the
ship (turboelectric drive). The A2 indicates that the ship is the second variation of the
original "A" design. An AJ3 ending would denote the third variation of the 10th (J)
modification of the first design (A).
